Animals and Animal Systems
Researchers study mainly purebred beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, goats and poultry to enhance meat, eggs and milk to improve human and animal health. They are also developing new ways to increase sustainable efficiencies in managing livestock.
The majority of the work is supported by the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, which has approximately 55 faculty devoted to research, teaching and extension activities related to domestic farm animals. Currently, the department has more than 65 graduate and 800 undergraduate students.
The department’s animal research and teaching units are located close to the main campus and include purebred beef, dairy, swine, sheep and meat goat, poultry, and equine teaching and research units, and the beef cattle, stocker and cow-calf research units. In addition, laboratories in both Call and Weber halls contain state-of-the-art labs that provide students access to most analytical techniques required for their research.
