Sustainability, Profitability and Management
College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension scientists use business strategies and economic principles to solve problems in production, distribution and consumption of agricultural goods and services in ways that are efficient, profitable, and economically sustainable. What they discover helps agricultural producers, agri-businesses and industry leaders across all agriculture disciplines better plan, manage risk and increase their efficiencies and profitability.
One of the keys to their work is the Kansas Farm Management Association, which has been serving producers for more than 90 years. Today, KFMA has a professional staff of 25 economists from K-State's Department of Agricultural Economics providing farm families with production and financial management information. The KFMA offers members:
- Sound farm accounting systems.
- On-farm visits.
- Accrual basis whole-farm and enterprise analysis.
- Financial benchmarks for comparing performance with similar farms.
- Year-end tax planning and management.
- Integrated tax planning, marketing and asset investment strategies.
- Assistance with estate planning and farm succession planning.
- Guidance for business entities and structure planning.
The food and agricultural supply chain is global and products produced in Kansas are consumed around the world. Efficiently moving those products around the world enhances the profitability and sustainability of agricultural producers.
