Meet Jania Don Juan-Ramos
Major/grad year: Agricultural and Natural Resources Communications – Dec. 2025
Transferred from Garden City Community College
Hometown: Johnson City, Kansas
Why did you choose K-State?
I chose K-State because of the great agricultural program and I’m a Kansas native.
What was the transition to Manhattan like from a small town?
It was intimidating at first, but I quickly learned that Manhattan is a larger town without the typical “big-city” feeling. The first couple weeks were a little scary, but I settled in well. I found supportive communities within Manhattan and K-State that helped.
How did you find community at K-State?
As soon as I got to Manhattan, I started looking for on- and off-campus jobs. I found two immediately, and quickly made friends with the people I worked with. I found good friends with the people I work with at a restaurant.
Why did you choose your major?
While I was in high school, I was a member of my local FFA chapter and served as chapter secretary and president. My adviser inspired me to pursue an agriculture-related major, and even though I don’t come from an agricultural background, I’ve always had an interest in the field. I started at K-State in agricultural education but transitioned into communications as I felt it was a better fit for me and my future goals.
How does the College of Agriculture help you toward your future goals?
My department specifically does a great job at preparing students for the future. An internship is a requirement to graduate, so it ensures that students have real-life experience before going into the industry. Classes are also great at giving assignments that are applicable and can be added to portfolios. They’re very good at assigning work that translates to careers.
What would you share with other students considering K-State?
The faculty at K-State is very supportive, so don’t hesitate to ask questions, especially when exploring schools. Additionally, be an advocate for yourself. You know what you want, so take the initiative to pursue it.
What's your favorite part of being a College of Ag student?
My favorite part of being in the College of Agriculture is the relationships I’ve built since transferring to K-State. The professors truly care about their students and I know I can go to any of them for help.
