Embracing Opportunities and Finding Home in the K-State College of Agriculture

Lailah Bias crouched down with baby dairy calfLailah Bias always knew she wanted to pursue animal science and become a veterinarian. While researching universities, she found K-State’s strong pre-vet and animal science programs and was drawn to the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. “When I came to visit my senior year, I noticed how friendly everyone was. It felt like I was at home.”

Lailah was also attracted to the resources and scholarships available for students. “I was able to visit each of the buildings at K-State and the residence halls, and it was such a friendly and welcoming environment.”

Arriving at K-State, Lailah initially felt uncertain. “When I came to college I was really scared because I didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “But when I got here, I noticed how friendly the community is and how supportive the professors are.” She found her professors approachable and eager to offer opportunities. “I’ve gotten so many job opportunities through asking my professors, and I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet.”

With small animal experience but limited exposure to large animals, Lailah took an introductory dairy science class. “It was fascinating…the science behind it, the medicine, and the complications of dairy science.” This experience deepened her interest in veterinary medicine. “I’ve had a long opportunity to learn about nutrition, how to give shots, draw blood, take fecal samples… things that veterinarians might have to do.”

Lailah, who came from a suburban background, emphasized that having an agricultural background isn’t necessary for success. “When I got to K-State, I was really intimidated because I felt like I didn’t know much going in. But as soon as I passed that first test, I learned that we’re all kind of on the same starting page.” For her, it’s about asking questions and taking advantage of K-State’s resources. “You can still get those experiences as much as you need.”

Her advice to prospective students? “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. I’ve learned that everyone knows you’re just learning here.” She encourages students to get involved and try new things. “Ask a lot of questions, go to club meetings, try out everything.” For Lailah, K-State has been about embracing opportunities and the support around her.
